I gotta be honest; I’ve never been a huge maxi skirt person. I understand the appeal, but I’ve never found one that I loved on my body. If you’re new here, I’m a huge self love advocate. Such a huge part of beauty is confidence, and for me, that includes: wearing things that make me feel beautiful, understanding that my worth isn’t determined by the size of my shirt, and talking about my body/type in a factual way. IE: I have curves. My body has fat on it (that is the only context you will ever hear me use the F word in). I have big feet. All facts. Addressing the reality of what my body is helps me understand what clothes will make me feel best!
And this maxi skirts checks all of my boxes, so I did some styling to show you how versatile it is. Any black maxi skirt would work, I just love this one because of the features: pockets (duh) and a ruched top that helps it lay really nicely. Here are my six favorite ways to style it!
- Tucked Tank: Because of that ruched detail, I LOVE wearing this high waisted and with a top tucked in. A simple tank is something you likely already have in your closet, or could add to your next clothing purchase pretty easily. Dress this look up with a statement necklace + wedges, or dress it down with a stack of bracelets and some converse.
- Statement Top: I’m a sucker for statement pieces. They’re an easy way to transform your entire look and wardrobe. These aren’t every day pieces, but investing in some when you find something you love is a great move. I added a belt with this top to bring some definition in; I don’t like flowy on top and flowy on bottom for my body type, so the belt helps. If flow on flow is your style or preference, it would be great as is!
- Off the Shoulder Top/Sweater: Because there is so much coverage with the skirt, I like to have a little skin showing in a tasteful way. Here I chose a cami with the criss cross detail to add a little personality to the look. Jewelry would do the same. I knotted the sweater for the same reason I used the belt above: texture + definition. This look will be great to transition from Summer to Fall with the same staple pieces in your closet.
- Cami + Cover: You have a lot of options here in terms of versatility. Solid pieces, patterns, different weights and textures. Playing around with all of those characteristics helps customize the look to fit your style perfectly. Here I played it pretty safe (for me) by sticking with the same color palette, but had to add the leopard bag + earrings for a little pop.
- Graphic Tee: This is an absolute pillar in my closet. I love a good Graphic Tee because it is the easiest way to add literal personality into your wardrobe. I love them so much that I only recently learned some people don’t like them, go figure! Luckily, you have five other choices in this post alone. This particular tee is cropped, but a regular length would work as well, as long as the graphic is high enough to be seen over the waistband.
- Stripes: To know me is to know my love for stripes. And don’t get me started on “not being able to wear horizontal stripes”; I could write an entire post on that nonsense alone, but I digress. Stripes are the ultimate neutral. Wear them with a solid. Wear them with another pattern. Tops, dresses, skirts, stripes are good on everything (*steps off soapbox*). Here I chose a solid tank knotted over the waistband of the skirt for that definition I keep talking about. You could tuck the tank, belt it, or just wear it over the skirt as normal, depending on your preferences. The blazer helps add a little sophistication to elevate the look.
So there you have it: one skirt, six ways! Tell me which look you are most likely to wear in the comments below!
XOXO,
MJ
